UNIT SEVENTEEN
AN ANECDOTE
An Englishman went into a restaurant in China where nobody
spoke English.
The waiter brought him a dish of food. It didn’t look like
beef, lamb, weal or chicken. The Englishman wanted to know what it was and
said:
“Quack, quack?”
The waiter answered: “Bow-wow!”
The Englishman left.
Quack, quack – cry of a duck
Bow-wow – a dog’s bark

22 years old; he’s Bob Dunsten; and he’s star. He stays in an expensive hotel.
He has breakfast in bed at noon. Outside the hotel hundreds of teenagers shout.
The Star finishes his breakfast, puts on a pink suit and
combs his green hair. He talks nonsense at a press conference for thirty
minutes. He has nothing to say, but the reporters write down everything.
A car arrivers at the back of the hotel. The chauffeur opens
the door. The Star, his manager, his photographer, his make-up man and his
thirteen-year old girls and boys listen to him. Five hundred policemen are
there too.
